Bakersfield to Horseshoe Meadows at 10,000 Feet (COVID-19 escape)
This another wonderful write up from Paul Gipe of Wind-Works.org. Paul maintains a collection of very detailed EV trip reports on his site.
I am happy to see this trip, as it covers Eastern Sierra area – one of my absolute favorite areas to explore.
Paul writes:
A round trip to Horseshoe Meadows from Bakersfield is 340 miles (570 km) and requires a climb from near sea level to 10,000 feet (3,000 meters). Altogether, the trip would use more than 90 kWh. This is well beyond the 60 kWh capacity of the Bolt’s traction battery.
Although it is a day trip, the drive this length is only possible when you charge on-route and the interesting thing is it was not possible until the end of July 2020. Electrify America has opened its charging station at Cosco Junction. However, the constant presence of strong headwinds in the Desert can affect charge efficiency significantly.
Chargers Used:
- Electrify America fast charger at Coso Junction (plugshare link , Google map)
- Upcoming : Caltrans is installing a fast charger at Coso Junction Rest area (plugshare link , Google map)
